Freshly Made Sketches 148

Posted on

Yesterday was a sad day for me. My grandmother passed away. She was an amazing person and lived good long life. She was 96 years old. I remember all of the good times that I had with her. I remember going there every summer for two weeks with my brother. Getting up at 6:00am to take my grandfather to work and watching the sunrise over the mountain. She made the most amazing pies and cakes, was an excellent cook too. Her specialty was shoo-fly pie and no one has been able to duplicate her recipe even though many of us have tried. We would go to Knoebels Grove, an amusement park in Elysburg, PA all the time. It’s an old fashioned park with rides and all of the sounds and smells that should be at an amusement park. She would go on all of the rides with us and split a funnel cake, her favorite. I remember Teaberry ice cream, still one of my favorites. She loved flowers and always had hundreds of them planted in the summer. I remember the smell of the lilac trees at the end of the driveway and her Rose Milk lotion. I’m glad that I got to spend the time with her that I did, she helped me become the person that I am today and for that I am grateful. She will be missed but remembered fondly.

When I sat down to make my card for this week’s Freshly Made Sketches challenge I could only think of stars and happiness because that’s what I felt when I thought of her. Here is this week’s sketch…

Freshly Made Sketches #148

The base of my card is Lost Lagoon Card Stock. I used a piece of Silver Foil Sheet that I embossed with the Lucky Stars Textured Impressions Embossing Folder*. It is adhered to the card base off to the left. My center panel is a shaker frame and is made from Basic Black. I used my Stampin’ Trimmer to cut out the middle of the front panel and adhered a piece of Window Sheet with Multi-Purpose Glue to the back. Some foam tape makes up the sides and I filled it with stars that I punched out from a piece of Brushed Silver Card Stock with the Confetti Stars Border Punch*. My greeting is from the Holiday Invitation Photopolymer Stamp Set* and is heat embossed in Black Stampin’ Emboss Powder on a piece of Lost Lagoon. Up in the right corner is another piece of Silver Foil Sheet that I cut out with the Stars Framelits and adhered to the card with Stampin’ Dimensionals. Finally some Frosted Sequins* are randomly adhered with Multi-Purpose Glue down the right side. A fun card that celebrates the life of a wonderful grandmother. I hope that you enjoyed my card for this week’s Freshly Made Sketches challenge. I appreciate you visiting with me and hope that you have a good Thursday.

  13. Justin, I am so sorry to hear about your grandmother’s passing, she sounds like she was an amazing woman! My mother was the same, loved to bake and cook, her specialty was pies, and beef pot pie (God what I wouldn’t do for a big pot of it on the stove right now!). I made a shoo fly pie on Saturday to take to my family reunion. Knoebles is still my favorite park, I live about 45 miles from there and go often. Always remember all those wonderful memories of your grandmother and she will always be with you. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers, God bless.

    • Thank you Jodie. She was pretty great! Your mom sounds neat too. I love shoo-fly pie! I love that you know where Knoebles is! I have the memories and I did have her for a long time. 🙂

  15. Justin, I follow your post but have never commented as it’s just not my style. However, today brought back such bitter sweet memories for me. I am also a PA gal (although moved when I was 13) however I can relate to your memories of your grandmother. I grew up in Milton. Each summer my grandparents took all the grandkids to knoebels for a summer treat. We would spend all day and enjoy all the rides. I truly hate roller coasters but my grandmother would talk me into riding it with her once where I would scream the entire ride. I remember the wooden boats with bells that you pulled the rope to meek ring that were around the coaster and I was always afraid the coaster would fall off the tracks and land in the water. I also can’t swim. I loved the merry go round and a ride that was my all time favorite was the WHIP! Tea berry ice cream brings back memories of that soft custard texture and don’t even talk about sho fly pie! I lost my grandmother years ago but that park and remembering time with her sure beats out any big park today with all the high tech rides. I am sorry for your loss but like me you sure have some good memories to always hold on to.

    Reply
    • Hi Stephanie. I appreciate you taking the time to comment and share your memories with me. LOL! I remember the boats and the coaster too! I love roller coasters but the first ride we always went on was the Whip!! Love that ride!! I will have some teaberry ice cream on Saturday. The shoo-fly pie I don’t think I will ever be able to find one like she made. I agree with you about Knoebles, it’s better than any other park I have ever been to. Tucked in the woods and the train! I loved the train too! I do have some good memories as do you! Thanks again!

    • Thank you Mallory. Yes, the stars are a little brighter. I think that’s what happened with the shoo-fly pie, she didn’t need the recipe and just went with it! I will have my memories of her here on my blog. Thank you again! 🙂

How awesome your grandmother must have been. It’s great that we can remember the little things about our grandparents. I know because I still miss my grandmother, she passed 28 years ago. But, she taught me how to crochet, embroider and make jewelry. I’ m proud of that cause I have 3 sisters and I am the only one who took an interest in it. I remember helping her do yard work, cleaning and such. We would always go shopping and she would buy me stuff. She cooked and baked as well, but not when I was one on one with her. We played cards and she even took me to play bingo, spoiled, said no one ever. Lol!!
Anyway, l love, love, love the card you dedicated to your wonderful grandmother! You know your bloggers, if there’s anything we can do, don’t hesitate to ask! 🙂
    Hugs, Donna
